As the days become shorter and the nights lengthen, we have time to reflect on all the jolly good things we have happening in our community. It’s time to sit on the couch with a cup of tea in front of a warm fire and read the winter issue of the Taroona News.

The most exciting news is about the inaugural Taroona Art Trail, an initiative of the Taroona Environment Network, which is to be held on Saturday 19 November featuring works by artists and community groups. This will be an exciting event not to be missed, which will build community spirit, stimulate creativity and celebrate Taroona’s beautiful coastal environment. Come along to an information session on 30 June to learn more! Did you know that the local Taroona under 11s Princes Soccer Team have featured in The Mercury recently after inviting Princess Mary of Denmark to be the team patron? They also invited Prince Christian to join them in a soccer game when he next visits Taroona. We’ll all be there to watch that game! The Chiton, our St Ayles rowing skiff, has been very busy hosting community rowing mornings off Taroona Beach. It was even seen at the New Norfolk Autumn festival with a hardy crew rowing in the upper reaches of the Derwent. I would like to say that they rowed all the way from Taroona, but it was the sturdy new trailer, funded by the Tasmanian Community Fund, that assisted in the boat’s transport to the event! Once again we have a diversity of news about events and Race you to the Alum Cliffs! happenings, from the Giant Book Sale in mid-July, a fermenting workshop, sports events and club updates, TEN working bees, school reunions, solstice events and more. Taroona Coastal Rowing Update
Sweeping down the face of the season’s wave towards the shortest day, nature continues to fling a melange of flood, wind, massive swells, snow, rain and sleet and we lucky residents of Taroona realise that we have had it better than many. Not surprisingly Chiton has spent most of the past weekends out of the water, but we have still managed a few excursions of late to report on. Despite our Come
and Try Coastal Rowing event competing with the Kingborough Council’s Love Living Locally Festival we still managed to introduce three enthusiastic crew loads to the pleasures of coastal rowing along our beautify Alum Cliffs. Many thanks to TCA committee members who catered for the event. Enjoyed by all. The TCA Committee pulling together
Tasmanian Community Fund. We should point out that the extremely generous grant from the Tasmanian Community Fund has allowed us to attend such events in our new trailer, which now also sports a weatherproof trailerable PVC trailer cover sewn up by Channel Canvas of Margate. In the coming weeks we will start work on the third part of our grant – the construction of competition oars suitable for next year’s 2017 St. Ayles Skiff Regatta at Franklin.
St Ayles Skiff Regatta 2017 Franklin. Once again, Women on Water of Franklin are planning to repeat the success of the 2015 event which will follow the 2017 Wooden Boat Festival on the week end of 18–19 February. As further details are released, all are encouraged to support the highly enjoyable fundraising events. We will keep you informed of these in future editions of Taroona News.
St Ayles Skiff Community Rowing Association of Australia Incorporated. The efforts of a small team led by Patrick Groot of Warrnambool have now succeeded in registering a national organisation to further the development of Coastal Rowing in Australia. The association’s agreed purposes will now be included in the model rules for the incorporated organisation. New Norfolk Autumn Festival Once again, fierce weather was brewing in the lead up to this event, but the strategy of driving up to New Norfolk for a reccie paid off. Rowing upstream into a stiff westerly and current we found our way upstream like a minnow darting between the reed and boulder. Although we originally planned to travel in convoy with a piner’s punt and two steam powered craft from the Wooden Boat Guild, we eventually set off alone to see if the other craft could catch us. The 2 kilometre row from Millbrook Rise took us to Tynwald Park in just under 50 minutes where energy levels were restored by sampling the tasty treats from the stalls set amongst the poplars. This really was a sweet event on the day and we are sure to return next year. With the stiff breeze at our backs and now rowing with the current, the return trip took a mere 15 minutes. Rob measured our speed at 13kph at one stage!

Taroona Gardening Forum

The Taroona Gardening Forum meets at 7:30pm on the first Wednesday of each month (except in January and July) at the Uniting Church Hall, 1 Taroona Crescent, Taroona. Our next meetings will be on Wednesday 3 August and 7 September.
TEN WORKING BEE CALENDAR On the first Sunday of every month, working bees are held from 10am–12 noon. Everyone is welcome. Tools and training are provided. Cuppa afterwards. ! *If inclement weather (e.g. very strong winds) a working bee may be cancelled. In this event, the working bee will be held the following Sunday, unless otherwise advised.
We share knowledge about plants, soils and gardening, regularly have guest speakers and presentations, and usually have plants or gardening items for sale. Highlights of the year are the organised garden visits and trips and July and December lunches. Our monthly newsletter notifies members of the upcoming meeting agenda and future field trip details. Whether you are an experienced gardener or a novice, new members are always welcome. The Taroona Princes seek royal patronage The Taroona Under 11 boys soccer team has asked Crown Princess Mary of Denmark to be their team patron. Princess Mary is an alumni of Taroona High school and, as her first-born child Prince Christian is the same age as the boys, they have also invited him to be an honorary team member next time he visits Hobart. Well done to the boys for pulling such regal faces (complete with mouthguards) and for being such photogenic ambassadors – how could the Princess and Prince possibly resist the request?? A signed request letter has been posted to Princess Mary and the Taroona Princes look forward to a royal reply shortly!

Taroona Art Trail The inaugural Taroona Art Trail is a community initiative from the Taroona Environment Network to celebrate what is special about the Taroona coastal environment. The Taroona Art Trail will open on Saturday 19 November 2106 (10:00-10:00 pm) with works by artists and community groups. There will be exhibits which will be the culmination of community workshops supported by artists. Come along to the information night Thursday 30 June at the Bowls Club to hear more.

Page 5 – June 2016 Playgroup Tasmania membership provides support, information and training for leaders within groups as well as insurance for all those attending a playgroup. Taroona Playgroup welcomes new participants at any time. It meets every Tuesday at the Taroona Community Hall from 10am to 12noon every week apart from school holidays. The hall is heated, bright and spacious with an adjoining well-fenced outside playground and picnic area.

Taroona Playgroup There is something special about playgroups. Perhaps it is because they are run by the group itself so that parents all help put out the play equipment and everyone pitches in to store it away at the end of the session. Other tasks are shared around such as cutting up the fruit, washing and tidying up, helping to supervise each other’s children while adults change a nappy or feed a child. This all helps to foster a sense of community and cooperation. Conversations with other parents, carers and grandparents naturally occur while playing together with the children. These give opportunities for mutual support on a variety of issues and friendships are formed. Recently, for example, Taroona Playgroup has welcomed a wide range of culturally diverse members – from Japan, China, South America, Syria, South Korea, Malaysian Borneo, the UK and the Netherlands. Family membership of the Playgroup Association is only $30 per year or $20 concession. This allows members to attend any playgroup around the state as well as access to a toy library, a membership hotline, ePlaygroup news, discounts and special offers from local retailers and service providers, Playgroup Association voting rights, discount on venue hire of the Playgroup Tasmania premises for birthday parties and events, access to products and resources to promote our playgroups and PlayMap, an online resource to plan engaging play activities that suit the ages and stages of our children.

Taroona resident awarded Order of Australia medal Congratulations to long-time Taroona resident Deirdre Tuck, who has been recognised for her contribution to the community in this year’s Queen’s Birthday honours. Deirdre has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division for service to medical research organisations and to oncology nursing.

A Golden Opportunity:
Celebrate 50 Years with the Taroona High Students of ’66! Taroona High was only eight years old when the leavers of 1966 said farewell to their teachers and their school. Now, they’re meeting later this year to celebrate their impressive 50 year reunion, with a series of events over a weekend, providing lots of chances for the students of that year to get together and reminisce. Tracing all the students from the year has been a time-consuming and enjoyable project for the organizing committee, requiring creativity and investigative skills, with students spread far and wide across the globe, and following a wide variety of career routes (1966 is remarkable for producing – among many interesting professions – an opera singer, a guitar maker, journalists, teachers, lawyers and health professionals). One of the committee members, Hilary Cromer (nee Watts), says, “There were about 300 students in our year, and we’ve managed to contact approximately 100 people so far – so we’d love for others to help spread the word by passing on the details of the event to past students, or by providing us with their contact details so we can invite them as well.” The weekend of events includes a BBQ, school tour and reunion evening. To make the Saturday evening event particularly memorable and fun, the committee is asking attendees to bring along relevant memorabilia to be displayed during the night. Regardless of your role for the weekend, this is a not-to-bemissed chance to celebrate a special year group. “This is a fantastic opportunity to catch up with everyone from your year, find out what they’ve been up to over the past 50 years, and share memories,” adds Hilary. “We’re really pleased to be able to put on this event and look forward to seeing as many past students there as possible.”

News from the Taroona Football Club Taroona FC will be running their successful clinics in the July school holidays. The open clinics, to be held at Kelvedon Park on 7 July, are designed for junior and youth players and will provide children with fun, supervised activities designed to improve both football skills and enjoyment of the game. The emphasis on providing a supportive environment for young players is particularly strong at Taroona FC with half the club’s players being part of the youth program.

Taroona Scout Group TAROONA SCOUT GROUP AWARD WINING LEADER Once again the Taroona Scout Group leadership team has been recognised at the highest levels for service and excellence in Scouting Australian Scout medallion. The Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC, Governor-General of Australia awarded Janet Stephens with the Silver Koala award. This award is presented to adult Members for at least 14 years of distinguished service to the Scout Association. Janet was nominated for her services to the Kingborough Scouting District. This adds to Janet’s Silver Wattle medallion received in 2011 for services to the Taroona Group. Again the Group continued the tradition of participating in the Taroona ANZAC day dawn service. Each ANZAC day the Taroona Ex-Services Club awards one of our youth members the Spirit of ANZAC award. This year’s recipient was Jack Horrocs. The award recognises the attributes of scouts that may normally go unnoticed, such as willingness, friendliness and “Have a go” approach. The Taroona venturers have been taking part in the Amazing Race run by the southern region Rover crews. Most of the units in southern Tasmania have joined in six weeks of fun competition – which included a chocolate night – yes you can compete for chocolate, a scavenger hunt , coke run, mini olympics, iron gut (not eating onions this time) and a quiz night. Our team did very well, coming second on at least 2 nights. It certainly is as much about catching up with friends as competing for the prize at the end. Several have also been part of the Hobart College musical production either as actors and singers or as musicians. It shows great commitment and

Most of us attended and it was very well received. Our venturers’ den, in the renovations at the hall is coming along and we hope we can celebrate that by the end of next term. Thanks to parents and others for help with transport while the “venturer van” is having an engine reconditioning – we all miss it. After Action Builders completed their work the hall extension project moved into the final stagerequiring the Taroona Scout membership pave the front area and lining out the old storage shed to enhance its usability. The extension was possible due to a generous grant of $40,488 from the Tasmanian Community Fund that represents the majority funding of the nearly $52,000 project. After a great effort by parents and King Cat bobcat the ground surface was levelled and pallets of pavers moved in readiness for laying. The lining is well underway thanks to the expertise and building skills of parent Paul DiBenedetto. News from POSSUMS PLAYCENTRE
Term 1 News The children at Possums Playcentre have had a creative Term 2, beginning with making hand painted pots for Mother’s Day. We also made lots of colourful hats to wear to Kingston Linc to join with other pre-schoolers for National Simultaneous Storytime. We listened to a special reading of “I Got This Hat”and tried on some amazing hats that featured in the story. Taroona Tennis Club The Taroona Tennis Club has been very active this year. A great deal of social tennis has been played and the annual Club Championships were held in good weather in March. Participation was good and everyone enjoyed the matches. For the first time in many years Taroona had a team playing in the AYC evening competition. The Club was delighted when its team won the grand final in its division. This year a formal agreement has been signed for the first time with a professional coach, Nick Martin. Nick can be contacted on 0447 293 582 and he will be happy to arrange coaching for people of all ages and standards. Later this year a significant upgrade will take place at Taroona. The Club has been successful in its Major Grant application and will receive significant funds from the Department of Sport and Recreation to resurface courts 1, 2 and 3. Kids’ club Ever played sock soccer? That was just one of the games of our Sock Silliness week at Taroona Kids’ Club last term. We also played Sock Volleyball, and the very popular Find the Hidden Sock. We’d love kids in school years 3–6 to join us playing games and creating things, making new friends, and learning from the Bible. Other weeks we have enjoyed doing Master Chef, Photo Rally, Kids in Charge, Water Games and movie nights. Coming up we have a BBQ which families of Kids’ Club kids are invited to. The Club’s name indicates that only those Taroona residents with a military background can become members – BUT the Club’s constitution, in regards membership types, has been recently broadened to include persons without a military background, and persons from Taroona’s surrounding suburbs. So if you are interested in meeting with fellow residents, consider the following activities: The Club has its own dedicated Club rooms in the Community Hall in Batchelor Street; it meets the third Friday in each month at 2.30pm for social drinks and supper which is followed by a presentation – some recent presenters were: Head Prefect from Taroona High School Sophie Marie Young, Retired Commander Peter Martin, and Sean Riley from Aquenal’s Marine Environment Assessments. The Club also conducts three excursions (bus and/or boat), approximately six barbeques, and two major luncheons each year.

Traditional Karate Classes Traditional Karate classes for male and females 12 years and above are now held at Taroona Community Hall, Batchelor Way on Thursday evenings 7pm - 8.30 pm.
Move with the music? Are there any ‘oldies’ out there who sometimes like to ‘move around’ to the music that our feet are familiar with (post WWII and onwards)? We’re thinking of getting together weekly at the Community Hall (Taroona), if there’s enough interest. When: Monday OR Tuesday OR Thursday 3:00 to 4:00pm
